Imagine If We Could Build a Tipler Cylinder

Imagine If We Could Build a Tipler Cylinder Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Because this not so little machine is about to take you on one. A trip back in time. Theoretically, building a time traveling device is possible. Or almost possible. All you'd need to do is to assemble an enormous cylinder, and get yourself a spaceship. Then you'd need to figure out how to make the cylinder spin at a few billion rotations per minute. And remember when I said it was enormous? For this cylinder to work, its length would need to be infinite. Before I get into the explanation of how this time machine works, let me give you a bit of a back story. In 1915, Albert Einstein came up with his theory of general relativity. He claimed that our Universe can be described by four dimensions. The first three would be the dimensions of space, and the fourth would be time. Together, they're space-time. Gravity can bend space-time like a bowling ball would bend a rubber sheet. The bendin...

Imagine If We Become a Type 1 Civilization

Imagine If We Become a Type 1 Civilization Im agine if we could control earthquakes and tsunamis to generate power. Or maybe even terraform every planet in the solar system. These are just a couple of the things that might happen if human civilization was to advance in the future. Global civilizations can be categorized into what's known as the Kardeshev scale. This measures a civilization's ability to use all the energy available to it, and is scaled from 1 to 3. Currently, humanity doesn't even reach Type 1 civilization. This is because humans don't use all the forms of energy on Earth. We use wood, coal, and oil but there's a lot more. So, what would change if humanity evolved into these types of civilizations? Being a Type 1 civilization means we would have complete control over all the energy on Earth. This means that we'd say goodbye to fossil fuels since they're limited and unsustainable. Instead, we could use the wind, s...

Imagine If We Covered Our Roads with Solar Panels

Imagine If We Covered Our Roads with Solar Panels We sure love our roads. We love them so much that we seem determined to pave the entire world. But maybe roads can become the future of renewable energy. That’s right, roads as energy generators. How? By building them with solar panels. In 2017, the United Kingdom promised to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025.Yet, they still have a long way to go, with only 33% of their energy having come from renewable sources in 2018.Could solar panel roads be the answer? Energy is created when photons from the Sun hit a silicon solar panel. Silicon is a semi-conductor and has similar properties to metal and an electrical insulator. So when the Sun's photons hit the silicon atoms on a solar cell, they transfer their energy to loose electrons, which knocks them off the silicon atoms. This generates electricity.Sounds good for the solar industry. However in 2019, out of the 17,127 tera-watt-hours (TWh)of renewable energy created globally, only 3...
